The original racing battery
- The facts behind the Power!!!
Autosport NEC Birmingham - January 2007
Motorsport is a demanding environment where high performance and
reliability matters. It can be easy to overlook the simple things that can
give the professional or club competitor an advantage in power,
performance, reliability and safety. Race and road cars have always
required some form of electrical power. The basis of this electrical power
is the battery. Top formula one, sportscar and touring car teams know
this, which is why they rely on tried and tested technology. The correct
choice of racecar battery can provide a significant advantage.
Many people are familiar with the terms of an AGM, wet or gel battery in
racing, but they may not appreciate the pros and cons of the technologies
involved. In simple terms an AGM battery has no liquid in its interior
make up so is completely dry inside, a wet battery is the most commonly
known ‘regular’ car battery that carries a liquid electrolyte inside a
case and a gel battery is a ‘half way house’ where a semi liquefied
solution is encased.
An AGM battery gives obvious safety and environmental advantages. If it is
punctured or damaged there is no leakage possible that could otherwise
lead to harmful burns or emissions. A wet battery on the other hand causes
these hazards if split or broken. A gel battery, even though more stable
than a wet one, may still leak albeit at a slower rate. The electrolyte in
a gel battery also ‘thins’ as its temperature increases during operation
therefore increasing the risk of harm.
But remember not all AGM batteries are the same and some batteries will
provide a far superior performance than others. DMS technologies produces
the Varley Red Top, the original race and rally battery, which has been
synonymous with motorsport for over 40 years. Proven in performance the
Varley Red Top battery was originally designed for extreme applications.
Using 19-plate pure lead technology, which had to meet the most stringent
tests for power, conditions and reliability, a Varley Red Top battery
offers up to 30% better engine start performance, is smaller and lighter,
whilst still producing outstanding performance and reliability. Another
advantage in using this battery is the ability to install it in any
orientation, giving the racecar designer or racer the option of placing it
in the most advantageous place with regards to space and weight
distribution.
DMS technologies and Varley Red Top are delighted to be associated with
the Sports 2000 series with batteries, charging solutions and portable
power packs for their racecars.
DMS technologies through the Varley Red Top range wishes every competitor,
official and spectator best wishes for the festive season and good luck
for their 2007 Motorsport activities.
